THE following Discourses, published at different times in England and in this country, have been collected, as imbodying a great amount of useful and interesting matter in regard to Scientific and Literary Studies. The Discourse of Lord Brougham was prepared as an Introduction to the publi cations of the British Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, and has passed through many editions both in Europe and in this country. The Discourse of Professor Sedgwick was delivered at the University of Cambridge (England) in 1832, and, though it has passed through four editions in that country, and is universally regarded as one of the ablest efforts of its eminent author, is now republished here for the first time. The Discourses of Mr. Verplanck are too well known to need commendation.

It is proper to state, that the Discourse of Professor Sedgwick, having been delivered on a day of annual commemoration in Trinity College, contains several local allusions, and an introduction of the same character, which it has been found expe
