III. The first volume containing the Advancement of Learning, the Essays, &c. will be published on the first of February, 1825; a volume every alternate month, will follow, until the work be completed.

THIS Publication is intended to form a part of a series of the best English classical writers, which the Proprietors purpose, should their plan meet with sufficient encouragement, to submit to the public.

While the Clarendon press has received from the admirers of typography in every nation of Europe, that applause which it has so deservedly earned by its correct and elegant editions of the writers of antiquity; the name of Oxford has not recommended to the world any regular series of the Authors of our own country.

To supply this deficiency is the aim of those who undertake the present work; and they trust that the execution of their design will prove as deserving of support as the attainment of the object is desirable.

Their claims on the patronage of this University, and of the literary world in general, will be founded on a superiority over preceding editions in the following particulars.

3. MODERATION OF PRICE.

With respect to the first, the Publishers beg to refer to the volumes already published. For the second, upon which the Publishers ground their principal claim, no expense or pains will be spared to render their efforts worthy of the public favour. No Author will be published without the assistance of some Graduate Member of the University of Oxford, fully competent to the task of Editor. Every former edition of any authority will be carefully consulted, the various references will be verified, Annotations and Notices, selected and original, will be added, and every exertion made to render these editions as complete and immaculate as unwearied diligence can effect. With respect to the third particular, the Publishers feel confident, that notwithstanding the advantages which these editions will embrace as to usefulness and beauty, the Conditions will afford evidence of the fair claim they have on the public attention.

CONDITIONS.

1. It is calculated that this work will make Nine Volumes, in Octavo, containing upon an average 480 pages each.

2. It will be handsomely printed, with a new type, upon a superior fine laid paper.

3. It will be published in volumes; one of which will appear on the First day of November, 1824, and one on the First of every succeeding month, until the whole be completed.

4. A fine Portrait of the Author, and a complete Index, will be given in the course of the work.

5, To Subscribers, each volume will be charged, in extra boards, 8s. to be paid for on delivery. At the conclusion of the work, the price will be raised. Seventy-five Copies only will be printed upon Super Royal paper, uniform in size with Burnet's Own Times and Clarendon's Rebellion.--For these early application will be necessary.

The Proprietors feel themselves here justified in making a few observations on the mode of publishing by subscription. It is in itself most clearly an eligible plan, for the vender and purchaser alike; inasmuch as, by securing a quick return of capital to the former, it enables him to offer his goods at a very low price. Numerous, however, as are its advantages when honestly conducted, it has opened a door to much fraud and deception. Works have been offered to the public at a much higher rate than their worth, the sale of a few copies has indemnified the Proprietors, and the original subscribers have been disappointed by seeing copies circulated abroad at twothirds, or one-half the subscription price.

The Publishers of the present work, pledge themselves that they have no such dishonourable end in view. They are determined, by selling at the lowest possible price, to give every advantage to those who may encourage their plan.

Should their present undertaking meet with approval, they intend very shortly to submit to the public a Prospectus of a series of Authors which they design to publish. An advantage will, as in fairness due, be extended to subscribers for the whole, though any Author will be sold separately.

The Proprietors of the proposed edition of Dr. Johnson's Works beg leave to remark, that, numerous as preceding editions have been, very little advance has been made towards the full illustration of our great Moralist. Some dry chronological notes and scanty advertisements have alone accompanied his writings. But it is the hope of the Proprietors, that in the present edition, much will be done towards the development of Johnson's real character and motives, and towards the clearing away of misrepresentation and party-spirit from those pages, which will be perused with profit and with pleasure, while truth and morality have power to attract regard.
