These couchings and these lowly courtesies
Might fire the blood of ordinary men,
And turn pre-ordinance and first decree
Into the law of children. Be not fond,
To think that Cæsar bears such rebel blood
That will be thaw'd from the true quality

With that which melteth fools; I mean, sweet words,
Low-crooked court'sies, and base spaniel-fawning.

7.

"For knowledges are as pyramides, whereof history is the basis. So of natural philosophy, the basis is natural history; the stage next the basis is physic; the stage next the vertical point is metaphysic. As for the vertical point, [the work which God worketh from the beginning to the end] the summary law of nature, we know not whether man's inquiry can attain unto it."

Explain this passage fully. What does Bacon consider to be the value of metaphysic?

8. State and comment briefly on Bacon's views of (a) The contemplative life; (b) Biography; (c) The deductive syllogism.

9. Explain with reference to the context :

(a) "The mind of man is far from the nature of a clear and equal glass, wherein the beams of things should reflect according to their true incidence; nay, it is rather like an enchanted glass, full of superstition and imposture, if it be not delivered and reduced."

(b) The ancient opinion that man was microcosmus, an abstract or model of the world, hath been fantastically strained by Paracelsus and the alchemists.

(c) Plato in his opinion of ideas, as one that had a wit of elevation situate as upon a cliff, did descry that forms were the true object of knowledge.

(d) All true and fruitful natural philosophy hath a double scale or ladder, ascendent and descendent.

(e) We are much beholden to Machiavel and others that write what men do and not what they ought to do.
