at Bancoorah, No. 680, dated 21st July, 1847, granting permission for the sale of books supplied to Government schools by the Book Agent to persons not belonging to those Institutions.

2. His Honor directs that separate accounts be kept of these sales, which should be forwarded half yearly, together with the sums realized to the Book Agent.

No. 680.

From the Under Secretary to the Government of Bengal,

To the Secretary to the Local Committee at Bancoorah. SIR,-In continuation of my letter to your address No. 514, dated the 9th ultimo, I am directed to state that the Deputy Governor Education. having ascertained from the Book Agent that there is no objection to the sale of books by the masters of Government schools to persons in the district, who do not belong to those schools, is willing experimentally to authorize books supplied by the Agent to be thus disposed of. It is, however, to be distinctly understood that the privilege of purchasing books from the Government depôts is to be extended only to natives or other persons of limited means, who might otherwise be deterred by the expense of procuring them direct from Calcutta from purchasing them at all. I have, &c.,

(Signed) A. R. YOUNG,

Under Secretary to the Government of Bengal.

Fort William, the 21st July, 1847.

CIRCULAR No 54.

To the Secretary to the Local Committee.

SIR, I am directed to forward a printed copy of the scheme for the scholarship examination of 1847, by which you will be Education. guided.

2. You are requested to state by return of post the number of sets of senior and junior examination papers that will be required in the Institution under your charge.

3. It is particularly requested that the order in which the subjects are to be given may be carefully observed, and that not more than one subject be given to each department on any one day.

4. Sealed packets containing the papers will be forwarded hereafter. Each sealed packet will be opened on the day fixed for the particular subject to which its contents refer, and not before.

5. Usual precautions to prevent unfair practices are to be carefully adhered to.

6. No time is to be lost in disposing of the papers in the manner laid down in paras. 18 and 19 of the rules circulated with Mr. Beadon's letter, No. 22, dated the 10th October 1844.

7. The answers and Essays of candidates for senior scholarships, as well as of senior and junior scholars desirous of retaining their scholarships in

the Kishnaghur College will be opened by the Local Committee and their award submitted for approval to Government in the prescribed form. After the close of the examination and of the subsequent proceedings the question papers may be made over to the head master for the use of the students.

8.

9. The general examination of the pupils need not necessarily take place on any of the days fixed for the scholarship examination, but it may be held on any other convenient day either shortly before or afterwards. 10. As there are no means available at the Presidency for composing a suitable paper in the Vernacular of your district, a paper in Bengalli will be sent, which must first be privately rendered into the Vernacular and then given in that form to be translated by the students.

To Commissioners Arracan and Tenasserim Provinces and to the Secretary Local Committee at Cuttack.
