Average attendance, College and Senior School Department 140, and Junior School Department 287, total 427 against 420 of the former year.

d. There have been numerous changes and new appointments in the Instructive Establishment; but the Principal has reported that they affected only one Subordinate Department, and did comparatively little injury. They are as follows:

d. The desire of the Committee to have a special Mathematical teacher permanently attached to the institution, consequent upon the unfavorable result of the Mathematical examination of the year 1846, noticed in the 4th para. of the last Report, was enhanced by the indifferent state of Mr. Rees's health during the early part of the year, and induced them to recommend strongly, that the services of two Mathematical Professors, one of pure and one of mixed Mathematics, be permanently secured by the employment of two of the Cambridge Graduates, who were expected from England by the April Steamer, and pending their arrival, Mr. Wollaston was engaged as assistant Professor of Mathematics.

th. Mr. Wollaston was employed until June 1847, when on the arrival of Messrs. Sutcliffe and Cargill, the Government sanctioned, temporarily, their employment at this institution, and Mr. Wollaston's services were dispensed with on their joining the institution.

th. Mr. Newmarch, the Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy, resigned in February 1847. The duties assinged to him devolved first on Mr. Wollaston, and subsequently jointly on Messrs. Sutcliffe and Cargill, until August, when under sanction of Government, Mr. Sutcliffe was appointed Professor of Natural Philosophy and Civil Engineering, and Mr. Cargill received an appointment at the Dacca College.

th. Mr. Knighton, officiating Professor of Literature, resigned in July 1847, having been appointed Superintendent of the Normal School. He was succeeded by Mr. W. Masters, who also resigned in the end of August, on receiving an appointment at the Armenian Philanthrophic Institution, and Mr. C. J. Montague has succeeded Mr. Masters.

th. Mr. Aratoon, the 11th teacher in the Junior Department, resigned in January 1847, on receiving an appointment at La Martiniere; and he was succeeded by Gopal Chunder Dutt Bissonath Sing, the 6th teacher in the Junior Department, resigned in September, on receiving an appointment
